Few private clinics are as well equipped as the Cancer Center of Irvine. We invest in the most up-to-date technology available, for diagnostic and treatment accuracy as well as patient comfort. Our on-site PET/CT Scanner, for example, enables us to do sophisticated internal imaging in-house—tremendously convenient for both our patients and doctors. Many of these technologies use computer modeling and automation to increase treatment specificity and accuracy, delivering the most effective treatment for our patients.

We have recently acquired the new Clinac iX Linear Accelerator, Varian’s most advanced and ergonomic technology for radiation treatment. This machine’s two motorized Exact robotic arms, which hold and position the kV source and kV imager, allow for automated and accurate positioning of tightly focused radiation beams so that our medical staff can carefully target cancer cells while minimizing damage to the surrounding, healthy cells. In addition, the Clinac iX Linear Accelerator features Real-time Position Management (RPM) for respiratory gating. This is highly advanced technology that allows the Cancer Center of Irvine to deliver the most effective radiation treatment for its patients.

Discovery ST 16 PET/CT Scanner

Our facilities at the Cancer Center of Irvine feature a state-of-the-art Discovery ST 16 PET/CT Scanner, which combines positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) to accurately detect, diagnose, and treat cancer. The Discovery ST allows our medical staff to examine the internal anatomy of our patient’s body as well as the metabolic activity in a single, non-invasive procedure, producing cross-sectional images that optimize our ability to see the exact location of the cancerous area. After the patient is injected with radioactive glucose prior to the exam, any cancerous cells will be displayed in the scan imagery, since fast-growing cancer cells are highly metabolic. Many private cancer institutions do not have this technology on-site, and therefore must refer their patients to a separate imaging facility to obtain this crucial information. However, the Cancer Center is fortunate enough to have acquired this technology.
